[ARCHIVED] Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa: March 23-27, 2026

March 23-27, 2026, is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa. Tornado Drill is 10 a.m. March 25.

As the weather starts to shift, the City of Indianola wants to remind you that Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa is scheduled for March 23-27, 2026. This annual observance serves as a reminder for residents to prepare and stay informed during the unpredictable forces of nature.

Please consider the following:

  • Be aware of weather hazards by signing up for emergency notifications through Alert Iowa or use a NOAA Weather Radio or other type of alerting tool. Alerts can provide valuable seconds for you to seek shelter and can help keep you safe during an emergency.
  • Make an emergency plan with your family. Think about where you will go and what actions you will need to take to stay safe if you are impacted by severe weather.
  • Build an emergency kit with items you and your family will need if you must evacuate your home.

Each day during Severe Weather Awareness Week, the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, National Weather Service and Iowa Emergency Management Association will highlight a different subject on their platforms:

  • Monday, March 23: Lightning Safety
  • Tuesday, March 24: Tornado Safety
  • Wednesday, March 25: Preparedness
  • Thursday, March 26: Hail and Wind Safety
