As the weather starts to shift, the City of Indianola wants to remind you that Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa is scheduled for March 25-29, 2024. This annual observance serves as a reminder for us to prepare and stay informed as we navigate the unpredictable forces of nature.
Please consider the following:
- Be aware of weather hazards by signing up for emergency notifications through Alert Iowa or use a NOAA Weather Radio or other type of alerting tool. Make an emergency plan with your family.
- Think about where you will go and what actions you will need to take to stay safe if you are impacted by severe weather.
- Build an emergency kit with items you and your family will need if you must evacuate your home.
Each day during Severe Weather Awareness Week, the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, National Weather Service and Iowa Emergency Management Association will highlight a different subject on their platforms:
- Monday, March 25: Lightning Safety
- Tuesday, March 26: Tornado Safety
- Wednesday, March 27: Preparedness
- Thursday, March 28: Hail and Wind Safety
- Friday, March 29: Flood Safety
Statewide Tornado Drill: 10AM • Wednesday, March 27
The annual statewide tornado drill will take place starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, during the weekly NOAA Weather Radio test. Additional information about the tornado drill can be found on the National Weather Service - Des Moines website.
