[ARCHIVED] Indianola Police Remind Drivers: ‘Slow Down! School’s Back in Session’

As the 2025-26 school year begins, the Indianola Police Department is rolling out annual traffic safety campaign – “Slow Down! School’s Back in Session” – starting Monday, August 25.

Through this initiative, motorists can expect to see increased traffic enforcement units in school zones and other high-traffic areas. The primary goal is to remind drivers to be extra cautious due to the higher volume of vehicle and pedestrian traffic that comes with the return to school.

“Back to school means more kids walking, biking and riding buses,” said Indianola Police Interim Lieutenant Brad Metcalf. “We’re asking everyone behind the wheel to stay alert, slow down and put safety first. A few extra moments of patience can make all the difference.”

Key focus areas of the campaign include:

  • Reducing vehicle speeds in school zones.
  • Ensuring vehicle occupants are wearing seatbelts.
  • Stopping for school buses.
  • Yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks.
  • Distracted driving.

To strengthen this effort in surrounding communities, Indianola Police has partnered with the Carlisle Police Department, Norwalk Police Department and Iowa State Patrol. Additional enforcement is supported through a grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau

“Our goal is simple: To protect students, staff and families as they begin the new school year,” Metcalf said. “By working together, we can make sure everyone gets where they need to go safely.”
