As we continue through the summer months and the busy cycle of community events happening in the area, the City of Indianola has compiled a comprehensive update about the various construction projects underway to keep residents, property owners and visitors informed.

Construction Update graphic for Indianola Downtown Square West Alley and Parking LotIndianola Downtown Square: West Alley and Parking Lot

Construction work on the west alley and the west parking lot at the Indianola Downtown Square, as part of the Indianola Downtown Square Reconstruction Project, continues to progress.

While the alley is completed, both the alley and parking lot remain closed to public the until the entire project is finished.

Originally slated to be completed by the end of July, it is now anticipated that work will wrap up by late August or early September.

The City of Indianola is nearing completion Phase 3 of the project, working on Hillcrest Avenue between Ninth Street and the trail crossing. Traffic in this area will reopen when Phase 4A begins on Monday, August 26.

Phase 4A specifically covers Hillcrest Avenue between Ninth Street and the driveway entrance for Apex Storage at 802 East Hillcrest Avenue. This phase is expected to start August 26 and be completed by late September. During Phase 4A, the north and west legs of the Ninth Street intersection will be closed, with traffic flowing from the east and south.

Construction Update graphic for South K Street Pavement ReconstructionSouth K Street: Pavement Reconstruction

The South K Street Pavement Reconstruction Project kicked off June 3. This project replaces approximately 6,000 feet of gravel road with a paved asphalt roadway.

The construction area is closed for approximately 5-6 months (approximately 100 working days from the project’s start date), depending on weather and unforeseen circumstances.

Detour routes are clearly marked. Please adhere to all traffic signs and instructions while navigating through the construction, and please be cautious and courteous for the safety of workers and fellow road users.

South K Street Pavement Reconstruction Timeline & Map

UPDATE (Tuesday, August 20, 2024): Crews this week will begin preparing South K Street for asphalt paving, aiming to be completed by Friday, August 23. Then, starting Monday, August 26, asphalt paving operations get underway and is set to be completed within a week once started.

Work for both the preparation and paving operations will begin at the south end near the Indianola Dog Park and move north. South K Street property owners can travel on W 12th Avenue for access, and depending on where the work is happening, may also need to use a dirt path to Hwy 92.

Parts of the road will be torn up and blocked off – especially between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. – and driveways may be inaccessible. However, access will be restored quickly to property owners, and emergency access will be available, if needed.

The Indianola Dog Park will remain open during this time, but parking lot access will be limited at times. Users can park along the north or south of the park and walk in from there.

Please note that the timeline is subject to change based on various factors, like weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances. We will continue to share updates on our website and through social media, as necessary.


Construction Update graphic for East Franklin Sanity Sewer Improvement ProjectEast Franklin Avenue Sanitary Sewer Improvement

The East Franklin Avenue Sanitary Sewer Improvement Project kicked off July 8. This project is important to replace the sanitary sewer line, add additional storm water drainage and replace pavement.

The intersection of North 9th Street and East Franklin Avenue will reopen to traffic by August 9, before school resumes. Construction on the mid-block section of East Franklin Avenue, just west of North 9th Street, will continue until it is fully completed on September 27.

During this project, East Franklin Avenue and North 9th Street will be closed. Traffic will be detoured using East Euclid Avenue, North 15th Street and East Iowa Avenue.

Please adhere to all traffic signs and instructions while navigating through the construction, and please be cautious and courteous for the safety of workers and fellow road users.

The West Clinton Avenue Culvert Replacement Project kicked off July 8. This project involves the replacement of an undersized box culvert between L Street and N Street to address flooding issues.

West Clinton Avenue is closed to through traffic between L Street and N Street. The project is expected to be substantially completed within 65 working days, depending on weather and unforeseen circumstances.

Construction Update graphic for Buxton Street and 2nd Avenue Intersection

Buxton Street and 2nd Avenue Intersection Traffic Signal Improvements

The City of Indianola is pleased to announce an upcoming project to improve traffic signals at Buxton Street and 2nd Avenue.

Starting Monday, August 5, the project will include upgrading the signal system, adding vehicle detection technology, installing new signal heads and ensuring ADA accessible sidewalks. Minor signal head upgrades will also occur at Hwy 92 and Hwy 65/69.

The work is expected to be completed within 60 working days, by this November, weather permitting. During this period, lane closures will occur, but traffic will still flow through the intersection. Lane closures on IA 92 and Buxton St will shift traffic to utilize the turn lanes. Please refer to the below maps for details on the construction zone and expected traffic flow during the project:

Temporary Road Closure at West Iowa Avenue from August 19-23, 2024

Temporary Road Closure – August 19-23: West Iowa Avenue Between N B and N D Streets

From 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. beginning Monday, August 19 through Friday, August 23, there will be a temporary road closure at West Iowa Avenue between N. B Street and N. D Street for crews to complete manhole repairs.

During off hours, crews will section off the manholes and work areas.

Please use extra caution, and thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
