[ARCHIVED] Temporary Four-Way Stop Sign Incoming for North 9th Street Intersection

EDITOR'S NOTE (3:45 P.M. Wednesday, April 3, 2024): This post has been edited to reflect that the four-way stop sign is temporary and findings from the continued traffic study will be presented to City Council after this construction season to evaluate and consider a possible permanent solution.

To address the overall safety concerns and continued traffic congestion issues happening along North 9th Street as a result of the construction work that began March 18, 2024, for the final phase of the Hillcrest Avenue Reconstruction Project, the City of Indianola recently installed updated signage to direct motorists toward alternative routes and last week conducted a thorough traffic study in the area. The findings were presented to the Indianola City Council at its regular meeting on Monday, April 1.

While the data collected from the study did not meet the guidelines outlined in the Federal Highway Administration's Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) – which considers various factors including traffic volume, intersection geometry, crash history and vehicular speeds – the Indianola City Council directed City staff to install a temporary four-way stop sign at the intersection of North 9th Street and East Iowa Avenue.

Variable message signs regarding the change will be placed Wednesday, April 3, and the temporary four-way stop sign will take effect Tuesday, April 9. Furthermore, the traffic study will resume following installation of the temporary four-way stop sign, where further data will be presented after this construction season to City Council to evaluate and consider a possible permanent solution.

The City of Indianola greatly appreciates the community’s continued collaboration and understanding as we work diligently and efficiently together through these next steps.
