Essential City Departments & Future Updates
As essential City departments, the Indianola Fire Department and Indianola Police Department will continue to serve the community, in addition to the Streets Department and various other snow operation supports as crews continue their work in clearing streets and alleys throughout the storm.
Should there be any further updates or changes, the City will promptly share them.
Winter Storm Warning
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 9 p.m. Thursday, January 11, to 12 a.m. Saturday, January 13. According to the National Weather Service, Heavy snow is expected, with total snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches. Wind gusts over 40 mph are also expected, causing significant blowing and drifting snow as well as near blizzard conditions extending beyond the end of snowfall.
Travel is expected to become dangerous by Friday morning, especially in rural areas. Blowing snow is expected to significantly reduce visibility to near-whiteout conditions by midday Friday into early Saturday. The hazardous conditions will greatly impact Friday morning and evening commutes.
Wind chills are predicted to be as low as 10 to 20 below zero, which could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes and could be potentially life-threatening if stranded outside.
Snow Ordinance Reminder
Due to 2 or more inches predicted by the National Weather Service, the Indianola Police Department has implemented a Snow Ordinance for Indianola. City Ordinance 69.10 prohibits parking on any public street or alley. This ordinance remains in effect for 48 hours after the snow has stopped falling or until the streets or alleys are clear.
When you see a snowplow, please give crews extra space to work. Once streets are clear and after the snow has passed, you may resume parking in streets and alleys.
If your vehicle is in violation of the snow emergency parking ban, you will be subject to a $35 parking ticket and/or your vehicle may be towed at your expense.
