Code Updates

One of the items outlined in the City’s strategic plan is to review and evaluate current building codes and look at updating to the most recent version of those codes.  Through the Capital Crossroads, the Central Iowa Code Consortium has been working on local government collaboration in the adoption of updated building codes. Recently, the Central Iowa Code Consortium adopted their final recommendations on building code updates.  More information on the Central Iowa Code Consortium, including their recommendations, can be found here:

City Staff has reviewed the recommendations of the Central Iowa Code Consortium. These recommendations would include the adoption of the following code, with amendments:
Additionally, City Staff is recommending adoption of the 2018 International Property Maintenance Code, with amendments

For comparison, the codes currently adopted, with amendments, include: 
All current and proposed code books are on file and may be viewed Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, excluding Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Years Day, in the Community Development Department located in City Hall, 110 North 1st Street, Indianola, Iowa 50125.   

City Staff is recommending a timeline for adoption that includes more than a month of time where the public is able to review and comment on the new codes and the proposed amendments. Additionally, a Contractors and Developers Meeting is scheduled for January 16, 2020 at 7 AM at the Indianola Activity Center.  Please contact the Indianola Community Development Department at (515) 961-9430 or at to RSVP to this meeting.
