    Join us for a delightful hour of music entertainment performed by professional pianist James (Jamie) Poulsen. Mr. Poulsen will present a program of jazz standards, and other popular piano hits, plus even some TV and movies themes. Refreshments will be also served. Mr. Poulsen lives in Des Moines and has played piano for 56 years, starting at the age of 3. He had many years of classical piano lessons and finished a Master’s Degree in Piano in 1985 and then studied 3 more years at the University of Iowa. He has always enjoyed playing every style of music, especially rock and jazz, for 45 years now. He has taught at Simpson College full-time for 17 years. Before that, he wrote, performed, and produced hundreds of TV and radio commercials and business films for almost every major corporation in Iowa and many others across the U.S., including Hy-Vee, The Principal, Wellmark, Medicap, Allied Insurance, and the Walt Disney Company in Orlando.

    In this class presented by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach you will learn your responsibilities as a babysitter, what parents expect of you, how to care for infants and young children, age-appropriate activities, safety, and how to handle emergencies. Open to boys and girls in 5th grade and above. The registration fee includes a workbook, childcare resources, and snack. Participants who attend all three sessions will receive a certificate of participation. Each participant needs to bring a baby doll and a children’s toy for use in class. On Wednesday, October 24th students have the option of arriving at 2:30pm following early dismissal; formal instruction will not begin until 3:30 pm. Non-4-H members must complete a 4-H medical form and return it to our office by the registration deadline.

  10. Historic Valley Junction Trip for Adults 50 or better

    Join us for a fun day trip as we explore historic West Des Moines. We’ll start our day with a tour of The Jordan House, a stately 19th century Victorian home built by one of West Des Moines’ first settlers and business leader, James C. Jordan. The house also served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Next we’ll proceed to Valley Junction with a stop Historic City Hall and Welcome Center on 5th Street before enjoying lunch at the popular “Cooper’s on 5th”. After lunch we’ll explore the rest of Historic Valley Junction in downtown West Des Moines… a charming, renovated railroad district with a collection of more than 150 retail businesses, including art galleries, fashion boutiques, antique shops, restaurants and specialty stores. A perfect day to spend with friends or to do some early holiday shopping for that one-of-a kind gift! Your registration fee includes transportation and admission to the Jordan House.
